Express Entry Permanent Residency

Express Entry is Canada’s expedited immigration system for professionals and skilled workers seeking permanent residency in the country. Express Entry is not a programme for immigration. Instead, it is a system used by the Canadian government to select foreign nationals who wish to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

How does the Express Entry system work?

Individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada as professionals or skilled workers must first create an Express Entry profile and submit it to Canada’s immigration department, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). On the website of Canada’s immigration department, a profile can be completed online.

An Express Entry profile questionnaire asks clients a series of questions that the Express Entry system uses to determine their eligibility for one of Canada’s immigration programmes. The Express Entry system does not manage all of Canada’s immigration programmes for professionals and skilled workers. However, the system-managed immigration programmes represent the most common pathways for professionals and skilled workers to immigrate to Canada.

A person can complete an Express Entry profile questionnaire and submit it online to Canada’s immigration department at any time.

What are the immigration programmes in Canada that are managed by the Express Entry system?

Currently, the Express Entry system manages four immigration programmes.

These are:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program;
  • The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program;
  • The Federal Skilled Trades (FST) program; and
  • The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

Each of these programmes has its own set of eligibility requirements. To become an Express Entry candidate, a person must only be found eligible for one of these programmes.
